Before the St. Patrick’s Day parade, six Topeka Roadrunners competed in the annual Great Topeka Bed Race for a $150 first place prize. Defensemen #4 Ryan Dickinson, #5 David Cyr, and #26 Matt Barnes, forwards #9 Max Harper and #19 Nick Granowicz, and goalie #29 Mads-Emil Gransoe all participated in the event.
The Runners were in high spirits throughout the whole event, despite the snow flurry that came barreling through Topeka late Saturday morning and into the afternoon.
While borrowing a bed from Sports Car Club of America, the boys made it to the championship round, beating out 14 other teams. They fought hard but ultimately finished second to States Construction.
Almost immediately after the bed races were over, the parade was in full swing with the rest of the team anxiously waiting for their float to go through the parade route
During the parade, the Runners took turns handing out candy and season ticket info to a devoted crowd that stuck around through the snowy drizzle.
The chilly weather on Saturday was good preparation for the team since they take off for Alaska this week for two weeks. They will play a series against the Kenai River Brown Bears on March 16, 17, and 18 and then a series against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs March 24 and 25.
The Roadrunners last home games will be a series against the Shreveport Mudbugs on April 7, 8, and 9 at Landon Arena.
