The Topeka RoadRunners bounced back from a 3-0 loss on Wednesday to defeat the Janesville Jets 2-1 on Thursday evening in Blaine, MN.
The ‘Runners scored first at 11:54 in the opening period as Bob Marx fed a pass to Edgars Lipsbergs in the neutral zone on the right wing, then Lipsbergs fired a crisp pass to Alec Hagaman in full stride on the left wing, blowing by the Jet defenseman and burying a heavy wrister through the 5-hole on the power play for the 1-0 lead. The second period was a scoreless affair, but far from uneventful. Midway through the period, Jake Rombach tossed the mitts with Rodney Lalonde, with Rombach getting the upper hand in the nearly even scrap. On the ensuing faceoff, team captain Kurtis Anton squared off with Janesvilles Beau Burgau and dismantled him with a flurry of punches, smiling broadly throughout the tilt.
The third period saw Topeka get a necessary insurance goal as Tony Thomas muscled home a loose puck on the power play for a 2-0 lead early, assisted by Jeff Burke and Alec Hagaman. The goal proved to be crucial as Janesville capitalized on a bad turnover and Larkin Jacobson scored unassisted at 10:14 of the third to cut the lead in half. Topeka didn\’t cruise to victory though, they battled, partially due to three penalties down the stretch that kept the ‘Runners short handed for a majority of the rest of the game. Janesville pulled their goalie, giving them a 6-on-3 advantage for a short while but Topeka killed it off, holding on for their first win of the season. Topeka (1-1-0) will square off on Friday against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs (2-1-1) at 4:00 pm.
