Runners Tame The Cats 2-0

Runners Tame The Cats 2-0

Now that’s how you start a new year. Bookending goals wrapped around another PJ Bridges shutout resulted in a big 2-0 win for Topeka in their first contest against Wichita Falls this season.

Jake Kamrass continued what has been the strongest stretch of the year when, on a power play in the first with the puck bouncing around the net, he tipped it past goaltender David Zevnik to give the Runners the early 1-0 lead (assisted by Tyler Poulsen and Cody Champagne at 12:21). A lead that would hold into the third when Mike Gornall, from Jasen Fernsler, split the pipes for a 2-0 lead at 2:14. Despite a furious assault and two late power plays, Wichita Falls was unable to dent the scoreboard and the game was Topeka’s.

Bridges was outstanding again, posting his fifth shutout in 14 starts (15 games) and lowering his goals-against-average to 1.29 by stopping 29 pucks on the night. It was his 10th win of the season and eighth in his last 10 appearances.

The RoadRunners and Wildcats complete the two-game set tomorrow at 7pm at Landon Arena. Saturday night’s game is Scout Night with the Runners. Fans looking to purchase tickets to benefit the scouts can contact the Jayhawk Area Council.
