Runners sweep Bulls, win 4-1

The Topeka RoadRunners built off Friday’s performance and perfected it Saturday at Landon Arena.

Following a comeback 3-2 win in overtime Friday, Topeka had its way with the Amarillo Bulls Saturday, winning 4-1 and finishing off a two-game sweep.

Topeka (16-27-4) had control from the opening puck drop, outshooting Amarillo (17-23-9) by a margin of 15-5 in the first period.

Forward Justin Kelley got the Runners on the scoreboard at 7:57 of the first period. In Kelley’s fourth game with the Runners, he sniped a shot past goaltender Jason Grande from the right faceoff circle, making it 1-0.

The second period delivered 15 more shots for Topeka, as two second period tallies put them ahead 3-1 entering the second intermission.

In the final frame, playing more defensive minded, Topeka held Amarillo at bay, with forward Chad Hillebrand scoring an empty net goal in the waning minutes to finish off the Bulls.

Goaltender Emil Gransoe picked up the victory in Saturday’s contest, improving his record to 8-14-0 for the season.

Topeka now travels to Shreveport, La. to face the Mudbugs March 9-10 at George’s Pond Hirsch Coliseum. Shreveport has clinched a playoff berth in the NAHL South and leads the division with 77 points.
