Last Weekend
Your RoadRunners ended the regular season in style, sweeping the Wichita Falls Wildcats on the road over Easter weekend.
On Friday night, Peter Halash drew first blood for the RoadRunners, swatting a puck out of the air and into the Wildcat net at 9:46 of the opening period. A slashing call against Rudy Junda led to a powerplay goal by Tyler Andrew at 13:17, giving the Runners a 2-0 lead.
Goalie Evan Cowley would collect himself and hold the RoadRunners off for the rest of the game. But Spencer Viele was better, stopping all but one of the shots that came his way. That goal came at 17:02 in the third off the blade of Kyle Bauman. The lead was cut in half but not blown as the RoadRunners killed a penalty in the final minute, winning the night 2-1. In the loss, the Wildcats were eliminated from postseason contention as Corpus Christi secured fourth place with a win over Odessa.
Saturday’s game was a much less contentious affair. The game was scoreless going into the second period when Kyle Bauman gave the Wildcats the lead with his goal at 11:11. Ross Luedtke struck back quickly, evening the score at 13:17.
The third was all Topeka as Kyle Sharkey put the final exclamation point on his all-time franchise point record with a goal at 5:52 and an assist of Sean Gaffney’s netter at 17:45. The RoadRunners led 3-1 and the record for points was finally established at 129. Tyler Groat found the net to give the Runners a commanding 4-1 lead with less than two minutes left rendering Chris Knudson’s goal at 19:46 superficial.
The RoadRunners hit the ice at Landon Arena this weekend for the first round of the South Division Playoffs.
