The Topeka Pilots staff and fans had an opportunity to get an early glimpse of the 2018-2019 team on Saturday.

Hosting a free scrimmage at Landon Arena, the Pilots’ blue team got off to a hot start, tallying three first period goals, on its way to defeating the white team 4-1.

The night also included the official jersey unveiling, as well as the unveiling of the team’s official mascot, Ace.

Pilots Head Coach Simon Watson said that he wants his team to be solid defensively and make opponents work 60 minutes, indicating as well that he was happy with his squads’ performances Saturday.
“I thought the compete level really increased as the game went on,” Watson said. “You saw the blue squad get off to a really hot start early, but both teams really settled in from there.”

With the final rosters still in limbo, both teams came into the scrimmage knowing intense play for the contest could make or break a chance to make the regular season roster.

“We want to be a hard team to play against,” Watson said. “We want to be a tough team that is fun to watch for fans.”

Now with a quick turnaround, the Pilots will begin final preparations for the home opener, Thursday Sept. 13 at Landon Arena.

“We’re excited to look things over and tighten things up for Thursday,” Watson said. “The boys are fired up and we’ll have to be ready to come out and compete.”
