Odessa hops past Topeka, wins 7-1

Trailing from very early on, the Topeka RoadRunners never could get momentum Saturday night.

Giving up a goal just 22 seconds into the game, Topeka (10-17-2) struggled much of the night, falling 7-1 to the Odessa Jackalopes at Landon Arena on Teddy Bear Toss night.

Down 4-1 at the end of the second period, Odessa (14-10-3) piled it on in the third period, tallying three more goals on RoadRunners goaltender Sam Metcalf. Metcalf gave up seven goals on 39 shots on goal.

“One thing I demand of our team is effort,” RoadRunners head coach Justin DeMartino said. “You will make mistakes, it happens. But when you come out and you don’t give effort, that is not acceptable.”

RoadRunners’ fans did get their chance to toss their teddy bears on the ice at 10:41 of the second period, as forward Hugh Quinn knocked home a rebound. Forwards Zeke Zeier and Austin McCarthy notched the assists on the play.

The two teams will finish their three-game series at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, where Topeka will look to get back on track.

“That’s the beauty of hockey,” DeMartino said. “You have to have a short term memory. We’ve got to the look in the mirror and be ready to compete for a whole 60 minutes.”
