In The Community: March 8, 2016

The boys were back at Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet School on Tuesday, reading big books to fourth graders and helping to get the word out about the schools ticket fundraiser. The students at Williams have been sell tickets to the Runners game on March 19th (Super Hero Night!) as part of an effort to raise money to support their amazing lab programs. In addition to reading, Sam Carlson, Cam Strong, John O’Connor, Jack DeMatteo, JB Baker, and Tyler Johnson toured the labs and visited with the kids in each class. From taking in the sights in the Space lab to playing with the animals in the Desert lab, the players got a first-hand look at how important these learning tools are and the impact that even a simple hockey game can have on our community.

That afternoon, Marcus Russell and Dom Lutz visited Auburn Elementary for the Runners Get Fit Program (sponsored by Subway and Great Life Golf & Fitness). After a quick stretch and an explanation of the rules, the kids split up into two teams: Team Lutz and Team Russell. Team Lutz seemed to come out ahead but the score was eventually tossed in favor of fast and furious gameplay that left everyone involved exhausted but happy. Each student received a gift bag courtesy of The Spectacle and Subway gift cards. For more information on how your school can be a part of the Runners Get Fit Program, call 785-286-PUCK.

The day was capped with the RoadRunners Coach’s Show at Dickey’s BBQ. The Runners game day MC, Chris Engesser, filled in as host for Arch Ecker. After detailing upcoming events in Runner Nation such as County Employee Night (March 18th), Super Hero Night (March 19th), Sunday Night Hockey (March 20th), and the 2016-2017 Kids Season Ticket Special, Chris was joined by Head Coach Josh Kamrass. The coach broke down the last few series and got fans revved up for the weekend road series in Amarillo as well as the big home stand next weekend. The floor was opened up for fan questions before coach Kamrass welcomed RoadRunner defensemen, and little brother, Seth Kamrass to the show. The two siblings bantered about hockey, expectations for the future, and shared funny stories to the delight of the Dickey’s BBQ crowd. The next Coach’s Show will be on Tuesday, March 29th, at Skinny’s Sports Bar & Grill.
